Ear (auricular) acupuncture is based on Acupuncture Theory where a single part (the ear) is used to treat the whole body. Modern western medicine believes that ear acupuncture works by affecting nerve impulses and the central nervous system - functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) appears to support evidence of this. An ancient oriental view is that 'qi' (vital energy) travels around the body along 'meridians and is affected by acupuncture points. A combination of both may be true; the work of Korean scientist Kim Bong-han in 1960's has more recently been rediscovered to identify anatomical structures that correspond to ancient acupuncture meridians. In 1957, French neurologist Dr Paul Nogier evolved the concept that specific parts of the body can be anatomically mapped and projected onto the ear in the form of an inverted foetus (or somatotopic representation) and this view is widely reflected in most ear maps today..
There are thought to be about 200 acupuncture points on the ear. Microystems Therapies and Training provides protocol driven evidence based ear acupuncture treatments according to best practice and high clinical standards. Protocols can be used to support specific conditions and/or focus on regulating the system, attempting to bring it back to homeostatis and improve wellbeing. Ear acupuncture is a relatively safe and convenient treatment with few known side effects, however please refer to the Patient Information link below to check if there is any information you might need let your therapist know before your treatment (particularly pregnancy) in order to optimise your safety. Microsystems Therapies and Training offers a unique combination of auricular acupuncture with reflexology so that you may benefit from two powerful microsystems working together simultaneously to provide targeted treatment outcomes and an improved sense of wellbeing.

Rubbing the vaccaria seed taped onto the neck acupoint on the ear shown here stimulates the acupuncture point without needles, for ongoing treatment benefits to support alleviating neck pain. Magnets are sometimes used instead of vaccaria seeds.
